This is a fantastic series; I am mainly writing this review to point out the fact that the master for the 11th episode is from the TV version, not the version that was on the Japanese DVD releases. Sloppy work from Bandai. Other then that it is a decent release though.
FYI, I’m going to be duplicating this review for the other two parts in this series. I’ve been a hardcore anime fan since the mid 80’s, I even purchase a lot of Japanese region exclusive anime. I’ve watched them all, from ROBOTECH to GaoGaiGar to Witchblade. And Gurren Lagann is a very, very good anime series. One of the best.

The story is very well paced, reminiscent of Gunbuster (the original OVA, not the new series). Sorry, I’m not going to give away any hint of spoilers in this review. But let me say that the character development and evolution is handled as well as any anime or film I’ve seen.
Gurren Lagann’s style is a mix of Naruto and GaoGaiGar. Familiarize yourself with those series if you haven’t already. Basically it’s just WAY over the top!! It doesn’t matter if it’s the characters, weapons or scale. If the scene can be made any more spectacular, it is. I can’t say enough about this series, other than BUY IT!! Support this kind of high grade anime!! And hopefully we can get more amazing anime series like this in the future. Thanks.

“The more compelling moments of the series come not in the various subplots surround the mystery in front of us–although it is a great mystery indeed–but in how indoctrinate and incestuous the interplay between politics, media, and industry are in the modern information age. All three stand at cross-purposes, yet secretly acknowledge that none can succeed without careful consideration of the other two. Vital communication often runs deep underneath the observed interactions between the groups, taking place in back-room meetings and clandestine e-mails, and through veiled threats.” Judge Arsenault

Having just come off the viewing of 10 weeks of the critically acclaimed HBO’s TV show ‘The Wire’, I needed a pick me up, and wowser did I find one. This BBC 6 show series that aired in 2004 has it all and it is an even toss up with me as to which show is best, ‘The Wire’ or ‘State of Play’. In both series the acting is superb. Bill Nighy as the wry, buttoned down, full of himself editor of the Herald hits the mark every time and won the UK’s Best Actor award. Polly Walker known to most of us from HBO’s ‘Rome’ is the politician’s wife and is flawless. David Morrissey, as the politician, John Simm and Kelly Macdonald as the intrepid reporters for the Herald mark this cast as fully realized.
The shotgun murder of a drug-related killing, and the apparent accidental death of Sonia Baker, a researcher for Member of Parliament Stephen Collins seems unrelated. The one difference is the makings of a scandal when the news of Sonia’s death hits the streets. Stephen Collins the Parliament member who employed Sonia is visibly shocked and upset when her death is announced. The editor of the Herald suspects some hanky-panky and sends two of his best investigative reporters out to look the matter over. Cal McCaffrey and Della Smith find that these two deaths are not only related but were linked to the oil industry and the British government. One scandal after another is uncovered and this minor story soon leaps to the largest story of the year.

The story of corruption and mayhem and lies and deceit are all realistic. The fact that the media, government and industry could all be in collusion seems all too true to those of us in the US looking at the war in Iraq and what has been wrought. What we don’t count on is that once we think we have everything figured out, a new twist occurs. Some of this is a little over the top, but the superb acting counters any fallacy.
‘State Of Play’ shines on the media, in this case, the newspaper, the Herald. Financial success is intertwined with the government, and it is not easy to convince the CEO and the board that publishing the story is the right thing to do. Everyone in this series is touched in some manner by the final decisions and actions that take place. The action, the suspense, the writing, the cinematography are all as one to produce one of the best BBC series I have viewed. Helen Mirren and Russell Crowe are at this moment filming a movie version of this series. We have the best here, how could they ever top this series?
Highly, Highly Recommended. prisrob 03-13-08

Outstanding story, great cast and superb direction! The cast includes some of the best British actors of current day. A great story that, for once, doesn’t talk down to the audience. If you appreciate a good suspense film try this one. Everyone I have shown this to loves it. I can’t imagine how this can be shortened into a feature length movie, at least the film is using the original writer. Here’s to hoping that there will be a second season of this series.

If you loved the sudsy world of 1980s prime-time TV, February 1984 will forever stand out in your mind. With “Dallas,” “Dynasty,” “Falcon Crest” and “Knots Landing” all in the weekly Top 10, for three consecutive weeks viewers were also treated to epic, melodramatic mini-series. First was NBC’s “Celebrity,” followed by “Master of the Game” on CBS and then ABC’s “Lace.” Each posted bigger ratings than the previous.

“Master of the Game” was a nine-hour, three-night smash. Based on Sidney Sheldon’s compulsively-readable novel, the saga told the 100-year story of the Blackwell family. At the center, Dyan Cannon wore innumerable preposterous gowns (don’t get me started on the hats!), and guided her family’s business empire to ever more dizzying heights. The plot moves at light speed, the diverse cast (everyone from Jean Marsh and Leslie Caron to Harry Hamlin and David Birney) was typical of the genre, and the sets were sumptuous.
Without providing any spoliers (not that they are needed for fans), this book-turned-mini advances the devilishly-addictive plot at breakneck speed. For newer fans of the book, this dramatization is well worth watching.

The collection would have earned five stars were it not for the *horrible* transfer. Produced at a then jaw-dropping cost of $3-million per hour, the series had a lush, gorgeous look. Unfortunately, the picture is often horribly grainy and the colors are inconsistent. But who cares? It’s the story that makes “Master of the Game” the winner that it is.
Sit back and savor the sudsy goodness!
I had first seen “Master Of The Game” upon its February 1984 premiere. As an avid fan of everything Sidney Sheldon has written from “I Dream Of Jeannie” to “Rage Of Angels”, “Windmills Of The Gods” and “The Other Side Of Midnight”, I had actually taped this on betamax (remember those!) to watch on that Saturday in winter 1984. I was a Sophomore dental school student at the time, which leaves you no time to watch anything during the week. Thank God I had taped this. I slept late ( until the afternoon ) that Saturday, transcribed two different school lectures from my little tape recorder ( didn’t those days seem so simple compared to today? ), ran out for some dinner with my best friend from school, and he came over to watch this with me – all nine hours straight through. We had hot coffee and a great night of television. This was Sheldon’s masterpiece, sprawling decades and world geography from South Africa and Maine, to New York, Paris and Vermont. I totally agree with the previous reviewer’s comments about Dyan Cannon’s hats! But that was the time, and money was nothing to these people. Dyan is dynamic as the matriarch inheritor of a diamond empire named Kruger-Brent ( named for two vicious dogs who almost finish her father off in South Africa, as he is about to discover diamonds in the sand on the beach, becoming one of the richest men in the world. Fortunately, the dogs do not win! But Harry Hamlin is worth his weight in gold as Kate Blackwell’s ( Dyan Cannon’s ) son, who is naturally gifted to become one of the greatest artists in the world, only to upset his mother to the point of trying to control every aspect of his destiny to the max. You’ll find out what this could cause him to do to his mother ( I won’t ruin it for those who haven’t seen it ). One of my favorite scenes, if not my favorite in the miniseries, though, schmaltzy as it may seem ( I am a New York City native ), is the scene where Hamlin is flying to New York to meet the woman he “truly” loves, with the Statue of Liberty’s head shown, lit at night, with an absolutely beautiful musical backdrop, as he is arriving in an older taxicab to a Park Avenue apartment building. Sidney Sheldon always knew how to make you feel rich, successful, and in love – even if you weren’t! Truth be told, this is my fourth favorite miniseries of all time, with the first three being ( favorite first ): 1) Harold Robbin’s 79 Park Avenue, 2) Irwin Shaw’s “Rich Man Poor Man”, and 3) Colleen McCullough’s “The Thorn Birds”. Don’t get me wrong, “Master Of The Game” is five-star all the way. The other three were simply more favoritive to me. But if you haven’t seen “Master” yet, get ready! Plan to spend a rainy day or night at home because you won’t want to stop watching it. Trust me on that! And enjoy Sidney Sheldon at his miniseries best! One other add – if you haven’t seen “Rage of Angels” and “Rage of Angels: The Story Continues” ( both Sidney Sheldon as well – the first was the novel both were based on ), see them as well. They will definitely warm some cold winter nights ahead. I’m a pathetic romantic, in case you haven’t figured that out yet!

Actually, I would argue that this is one of the greatest films ever made. Enough time has passed for us to get over the shock of McBride / Carson / Gere’s desecration of that French classic (which was all about breaking taboos in the first place). Hopefully this re-release will bring this funny, passionate, beautiful film to a new generation of filmmakers and film buffs who heard somewhere that Tarantino actually prefers this version. He does, and he’s right! Where the original was remote, cynical, and yes, pretentious (seen it lately?), this one is romantic, exciting, and intensely felt. It’s a creative, complete reworking of the original material which manages to transpose the story from Paris to Los Angeles, substitute Eno and Glass and Jerry Lee Lewis for that anonymous cool jazz, replace Bogart with the Silver Surfer, etc. And it all works! It does all this without losing one iota of the dashing spirit that made the original so memorable, and yet like the few great remakes it’s totally its own film. I’m telling you, folks, the McBride “Breathless” is the GREATEST!
This seems to be a movie people either absolutely love or absolutely hate. I lean toward the former camp. I would have given five stars, but the soft-porn proclivities of this film — and Richard Gere’s annoying character (who does have redeeming qualities) — were reasons for the deduction.
Any good girl who’s ever been in love with Mr. Wrong (myself included!) will hold an appreciation for this movie. The central characters, Monica Poiccard (Kaprisky) and Jesse Lujack (Gere) are perfect in their diametric opposition to each other. Monica is an honors Architecture student at UCLA with a bright future ahead of her; Jesse is a small-time, smart-alec hood whose big ambition in life is to emulate his hero, the comic-book character Silver Surfer. While speeding through the desert, he is pulled over by and accidentally shoots and kills a cop. Needing a place to hide, Jesse pops back into Monica’s life. He was merely a fling she’d had while on vacation in Las Vegas, but she was something much more to him. Jesse’s lifestyle revolts and excites Monica at the same time, which is why she takes up with him as he drags her along with him on a high-energy run from the law.
I consider this film to be one of my guilty pleasures. Despite its aforementioned drawbacks, it possesses a lush decadence that’s quite entertaining. I recommend it to anyone who wants to indulge!

I first bought this DVD for the Zoboomafoo episodes. We have a VHS of Zoboo that my kids, six and four, have really enjoyed. This PBS Kids Pack seemed to be more economical than buying the DVD of just Zoboomafoo, so I bought it instead hoping that they would also enjoy Sagwa and George Shrinks. And they did. They have actually watched George Shrinks the most. The best thing is that I feel good about my kids watching these videos because of the character lessons in Sagwa and George Shrinks and the educational value in Zoboomafoo. It is a really good combination pack.
These are great titles. A little bit of everything. If you are hoping to get the complete series of any of these shows, this is not the pack to get. If you want a good selection of different styles of shows for your kids, then this is a great option.

Quick Facts: I’m 27, been a fan of Dragon Ball Z since 1999, and a fan of anime since 1992. I’m very picky about uncut anime, and I always prefer the original aspect ratio. I dislike English dubs as most any anime fan does. This is my first review of a DVD.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Dragon Ball Z – Season One! Click Here
Video: FUNimations claims this is a widescreen transfer from the original video. Dragonball Z fans are screaming the original video was cropped to make it widescreen. I’ve spent the last 2 days with WinDVD and Photoshop to confirm or disprove this. Anyone who does image editing knows that cropping a 4:3 image to 16:9 can be really dramatic. After watching 67 episodes of this new release from FUNimation, I wasn’t completely convinced about the transfer being cropped from it’s original 4:3 aspect ratio. Dragonball Z fans are correct to say the widescreen transfer is cropped, but they also would need to admit to that the 4:3 broadcast we fans know and love was also cropped! The widescreen transfer has extended video on the left and right that was cropped for the original 4:3 TV broadcast some 18 years ago. A time when 4:3 televisions were standard. In recent times, 16:9 televisions have taken over, and we’re much more widescreen oriented. The original animation aspect ration I got when I was done sizing and layering the images over each other from the 4:3 and 16:9 gave me a 16:11 aspect ratio. This my Dragon Ball Z fans… Seems to be the ORIGINAL size. 16:11 though won’t look all that great on any TV set. Also makes sense though since animators make the original larger so when transferring the animation to video, there’s room to play with so you don’t have random spots missing on the sides, top and bottom. So if you have to ask yourself if this is a legitmate 16:9 transfer or some 4:3 cropped (cut/edited) video, the real answer is… It’s a legimate 16:9 transfer. Both the 4:3 and the 16:9 are cropped from the original… In the end, it depends on personal preference.
The video was supposedly cleaned up, and the colors remastered. Personally, For the most part, I see an increased brightness on the video, which actually does look better. They did clean up the video and removed grain and video noise. All in all, the remastered picture looks better compared to the original DVDs that FUNimation released.

Audio: I can’t say much about the sound quality since I’m using my computer for the time being. Just moved, and have yet to hook up my home theater again. FUNimation is releasing this with 3 settings. The original Japanese language and music. Nothing seems to have changed between the original DVDs and this release. For those who watch DBZ subbed only, I see no change at all. The second option is the English dub with the Japanese music. This is actually quite interesting, and I give credit for this addition! In this rare instance, I have always like the dubs for Dragon Ball Z, so having the option to watch it with the original music is great. If that isn’t enough though, this new way to watch the series is in Dolby Digital 5.1. Then there’s the third option which is the English dub with the US music done by Bruce Faulconer in stereo. I guess doing this in 5.1 would have taken too much time.
The dub was also redone for whatever reason. After comparing the original DVDs vs the new ones, the older ones sometimes seem a bit more consistent with what was originally being said. One quick example would be this…
Japanese Audio: Vegeta “I suppose”
Original English Dub: Vegeta “I guess so”
New English Dub: Vegeta “Shut up!”
Why FUNimation went out of the way to do a whole new dub, I have no idea… This seems to be wasteful of production time, or maybe they can’t use the original dub anymore. Why FUNimation does anything at times is beyond my understanding. They have time to redub the series, but they can’t make the English dub with the US music in 5.1…
The menus on these discs are light years ahead of the original DVDs FUNimation released, with much more chapter points, and the MARATHON option which allows you to watch all the episodes on a disc straight through without the opening/closing between the episodes. More like watching a movie than episode after episode, having to skip after each one.
The packaging of the discs in the case is rather nice. Seems upon collection the series, you can line them up for a large “DRAGONBALL Z” title! Each season comes with a small booklet with character information, episode information, etc.
Also want to note that according to FUNimation, this video was remastered on HD 1080/24p. This doesn’t mean the discs are HD and can optimize the new HDMI 1.3, but it does show that 1080/24p mastering is being done, and we’re probably not far off from seeing this much more commonly done and seeing HDDVDs with actual 1080/24p video as TVs are now coming out with HDMI 1.3.
I hope this information helps people looking to possibly buy this series or in the case I’m in, buy it again for the remastered video and widescreen version. Also much more compact compared to dozens of standard DVD cases!
Giving this 4 stars. Why not 5? Because there is still room for improvement. The new dub doesn’t always seem to fit, and in comparison to the actual translation of what was being said, it’s like comparing black and white. FUNimation was always lousy about the dub translation, and there’s little excuse for rebubbing the series and making it just as poor as the first time around. Making the English Dub with Japanese music 5.1, but the US music in 2.0 is another point away from me. While this doesn’t change anything for me, if they had the time to redub and upscale to 5.1 for the Japanese music, it seems to me they should have taken the time to upscale the US music track too. Lazy? Additionally, they should have some slight explanation of the widescreen transfer included. The extras on the discs are meaningless.
For the price these new box sets go for… It’s an unbeatable deal for the series and Dragon Ball Z fans.
Let me start off by saying this…If you are worried about buying this set because of the well known “cropping-issue” don’t be. It’s not nearly as bad as most people make it out to be. I finished watching it and there was not one instance where I could point out that it had in fact been cropped from the original episodes. I had to go online and find the comparisons to even notice. So yes there is cropping but in my opinion it in no way took away from the amazing experience of watching DBZ.
I think what I like about this the most is that they have redone the voice acting. You can now watch the entire Dragon Ball Z series start to finish with the same voice actors. That and the fact that you can get most of these sets for $24.99 makes this a steal of a deal.

The second installment of Disney’s TaleSpin brings me out of my ‘Bear-ish laid-backness’ as three of my top five TS episodes are featured here – ‘The Old Man & The Sea Duck’ (DISC ONE), “For Whom The Bell Klangs” Parts One & Two & ‘Citizen Khan’ (DISC TWO), “Flight School Confidential” (DISC THREE). Oh, Did I mention “A Jolly Molly Christmas”?? Umm, sounds like a Christmas-time rush to get this. Sadly, this box set doesn’t have any added features or interviews from those who helped create this masterpiece 17 -short- years ago. I’m hoping Disney will add extra behind-the-scenes featurettes for the final box set next year (along with comments from co-creator Jymn Magon, Bob Taylor and the remaining surviving voice cast involved with the GREATEST ANIMATED TV SERIES EVER) and maybe have fan video/website features too (Listening Disney??? You have my email on this site.) Thanks for your time. SPIN IT!!! JG
I’ve waited for this collection for a while, and I was finally able to get it. Volume 2 has some of the best episodes of the show, including “Jolly Molly Christmas”, a very touching episode that kids and parents will love. Unfortunately, the DVD is still lacking in any special features, commentaries, or interviews. I was hoping they would have that by now, but I guess this is just something Disney does on the side while they devote their energy to making second-hand movie sequels. But, if you bought volume I, you should definitely get this. It’ll be money well-spent.

I wasn’t expecting much from this movie due to its weird title and what I felt was an awkward animation style. Plus I was an avid Hayao Miyazaki fan, and I did not believe any anime movie could overcome the feel-goodness of his movies in general. I was very wrong.

“The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” (or “Toki wa Kakeru Shoujo”) is about a girl named Makoto Konno who, after a strange encounter in a lab after school discovers she has the power to “jump” through time. Literally.
Although it started off slow, the pace made the hackneyed concept of time jumping much more original. Not to mention the main characters were all extremely likable and realistic. I couldn’t help but root for Makoto in whatever crazy things she wound up doing in the past. The things she went back to change were trivial things, like a test she failed, or when her friend Chiaki confessed to her. They are all things that ordinary, idiotic people like ourselves would do if we had that power. This story is only something the Japanese could come up with, and I commemorate director Mamoru Hosoda for blending mundane Japanese life with such a fantastical concept like time travel. It’s warm, funny, and touching. That is, for the first half.

The second half of the film takes a hugely dramatic turn. It’s almost mind-blowing in the way things played out. For spoiler fans, it has something to do with Chiaki (You know, the friend who confessed to her?). Anyways, I loved this shift in the plot, even though it lost some of its precious feel-good elements along the way. Makoto still managed to keep some humor in her crazy ventures, and her personality is not lost in the plot twist. Chiaki’s transformation though, I’m still a bit iffy about.
I think this movie is way up there with Miyazaki’s films. The perfect blend of fantasy and feel-goodness, along with some dry humor as well makes for an excellent film. I also felt myself warming up to the animation style as well, which was very contemporary, so I wasn’t used to it, but I’m now completely in love with it. “Time waits for no one” so go watch this movie!
When I put The Girl Who Leapt Through Time into my DVD player, I expected a very good albeit light anime movie. What I got instead was an emotional experience which might be the most moving anime movie I’ve seen so far.
Makoto Konno is a slightly clumsy tomboy on the verge of the age right when teens start looking at the opposite sex differently whose priority is hanging out with her two best buddies – cheeky but endearing Chiaki Mamiya and evenheaded, gentlemanly Kosuke Tsuda. One day, her bicycle brakes won’t work, and she finds herself about to be killed by crashing into a train passing her lane. Fortunately, a miracle occurs – and she finds herself having time-jumped backwards safe and sound.
After talking to her aunt, who had a similar experience, she experiments and finds that she can do it again, begining with small things like preventing the poaching of a snack by her sister. But when things start progressing to slightly more serious matters and she takes a series of jumps in a panic when she realizes that one of her best guys is about to say something to her privately that will take them to a place from which they can’t come back that she isn’t sure she’s ready to go, things take a dark turn and spiral out of control – and she finds that this time, she might not be able to fix what she’s done…
Part sci-fi with a neat twist that anyone who isn’t familiar with the source material probably won’t see coming and part teen drama with an achingly accurate depiction of that critical time in life and personal development, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a warm, poignant work that should be in the collection of any anime fan.

Season 8 may be the last above average season of The Simpsons. It would not be long after this season when I stopped enjoying The Simpsons as much. Their story lines became increasingly over-the-top and the shows were often to intent on focusing on the celebrity of the week. This season starts to go in that direction with some way-out episodes, but is not quite there yet. Season 7 is my favorite but Season 8 has many gems including “The Homer They Fall,” “Burns, Baby Burns,” “Lisa’s Date with Density,” “Hurricane Neddy,” “Homer Vs. The Eighteenth Amendment,” and “In Marge We Trust.”

“Treehouse of Horror VII”: (a) The Thing and I: Bart finds out he has an evil Siamese brother Hugo; (b) The Genesis Tub: Lisa conducts experiments with her fallen baby tooth and creates a mini society. When she is zapped into miniature size, she warns the little society against the “Dark One” (Bart); (c) Kang and Kodos come to earth posed as Bob Dole and Bill Clinton. Of course, with the two-party system, one of them has to win.
“You Only Move Twice”: Homer begins working for Hank Scorpio who is a pleasant and fun boss despite his plans for global terrorism and extortion.
“The Homer They Fall”: Homer becomes a boxer with Moe as his manager. All goes well until he has to fight Drederick Tatum. Great Mike Tyson and Don King characters.

“Burn, Baby Burns”: Mr. Burns finds out he has a long-lost son (voiced by Rodney Dangerfield) who becomes bosom buds with Homer. Love the line: “This place is emptier than a Scottish pay toilet.”
“Bart After Dark”: After Bart damages property at an spooky old house, Homer forces Bart to work at the house which turns out to be a burlesque house.
“A Milhouse Divided”: Milhouse’s parents get divorced and his dad decides to becomes a [bad] singer.
“Lisa’s Date with Density”: Lisa develops a crush on bully Nelson Muntz and thinks she can change him. I love the scene where Nelson throws a rock at a window and tries to tell Lisa the cops are chasing him and he needs a hideout only to have Homer open the window to tell him Lisa’s room is the next window over. I also love the auto-dialer sub-story.
“Hurricane Neddy”: One of my all-time favorites. Ned Flanders’s house is the only one destroyed in a hurricane and he begins to question his faith. In a flashback, we find out how he started saying doodily, diddily, as a why to hold in rage.
“The Mysterious Voyage of Homer”: This is a weird one. Homer eats a bad pepper at a chili cook-off and hallucinates about a coyote who urges Homer to find his soul mate.
“The Springfield Files:” X-Files take-off.
“The Twisted World of Marge Simpson”: After being booted out of the Investorettes club for being too conservative, Marge buys a pretzel franchise but keeps hitting stumbling blocks to success. Homer decides to recruit the services of Fat Tony.
“Mountain of Madness”: This one is also a little odd. During a survival retreat for the nuclear power plant, Mr. Burns and Homer are snowed-into a cabin and eventually start hallucinating.
“Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala(“doh!”)cious”: The Simpsons need a nanny and hire Mary Pop..,uh,…Shary Bobbins.
“The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show”: Homer becomes the voice of a new cartoon character who doesn’t go over very well.
“Homer’s Phobia”: Homer meets a funny guy who runs a collectible shop “Cockamamies” (gotta love that name) named John and is shocked when he discovers John, uh, prefers the company of men. Worst of all, Homer thinks John is influencing Bart.
“Brother From Another Series”: (Great title). Sideshow Bob is released from prison and joins forces with his brother Cecil (voiced by David Hyde Pierce, of course, Sideshow Bob is voiced by Kelsey Grammer–get the title?). Could Bob actually be the good guy in this episode???
“My Sister, My Sitter”: Lisa becomes Bart’s baby sitter and Lisa is afraid she’s killed her brother after knocking him down the stairs. This one is a little over-the-top.
“Homer Vs. The Eighteenth Amendment”: One of my all-time favorites! Prohibition starts up again in Springfield and Homer assists Moe in creating a speakeasy. Can Homer out-fox Rex Banner?
“Grade School Confidential”: Principal Skinner and Mrs. Krabappel start a romance and create controversy at Springfield Elementary. The Skinner is a virgin thing was a little much.
“The Canine Mutiny”: Bart gets hold of a fake credit card and buys all kinds of stuff including a pedigree collie, Laddie. When repo-men come to collect the stuff, Bart gives them Santa’s Little Helper instead of Laddie and soon regrets the decision.
“The Old Man and the Lisa”: Mr. Burns, who’s recently lost his fortune, joins forces with Lisa to create a recycling plant. Of course, Mr. Burns could never turn this plant into an evil operation…yeah, right! I love Moe’s line about the “Little Lisa” logo: “Ah, isn’t that cute. It makes Little Debbie look like a pile of puke.”
“In Marge We Trust”: Marge becomes the “Listen Lady” and burned-out Mr. Lovejoy is worried she has become more popular than him with his flock.
“Homer’s Enemy”: Frank Grimes is the new employee at the nuclear power plant and, unlike everyone else, he doesn’t accept Homer’s incompetence. A very dark episode.
“The Simpsons Spin-off Showcase”: A 1970s-style variety show take-off of The Brady Bunch. Just as Jan refused to participate, Lisa is replaced by an actress who looks just like her…yeah, right!
“The Secret War of Lisa Simpson”: Bart is forced to enlist in military school and, impressed by the discipline which seems odd since Lisa is such a free thinker that one would not think she’d be attracted to the unquestioning soldier’s life, she decides to join, too. And all the boys accept her…uh, no.
I looked forward to buying the next released season of The Simpsons on DVD every year, however, getting season eight this year is going to be a bittersweet occasion. Of course, I add yet another solid gold season of The Simpsons to my collection, but this in turn will result in the end of my Simpsons collection. Yes, like many other reviewers of this DVD set on Amazon, I share the same sentiment that this is the last season worth buying. From season 9 and onward, the show grew progressively worse in the long run, and lost what made it worth watching in the first place.
Basically, this is the last season of The Simpsons that retained its witty sense of humor, and didn’t resort to outlandish storylines and throwing in celebrity guest stars week after week. Episodes like “You Only Move Twice” (I love the 007 scene), “A Milhouse Divided”, “The Twisted World Of Marge Simpson”, Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala(ANNOYED GRUNT)cious”, “The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show”, “Homer’s Phobia”, and the classic “Homer’s Enemy” exudes the shows last ounces of genius from script to screen. The storylines of these episodes are enjoyable, and captivating from start to finish. The witty humor of the past seasons is well retained in season eight with many side splitting moments of hillarity to prove it. In addition, season eight showcases further development of favorite characters, as well as the introduction of unforgettable new favorites like Frank Grimes and Poochie.
Truly, Season 8 is indeed the end of an era of what was the most brilliantly inventive series on television. Fortunately, it will live infinitely on DVD to be respected and enjoyed by core fans and casual viewers alike.
